Default How To: Rear Well Fiberglass Subwoofer Enclosure

Hello class. Today we will discuss designing and building a fiberglass bottomed enclosure for the rear well of an F-body. The enclosure will be sealed and will hold two 10 inch subs. A few of the key points will be:
  • Removal of the T-top holders and the protruding bolts
  • Preparing the area for fiberglass
  • How to work with fiberglass
  • Layering and bracing techniques
  • Finishing techniques for a near-stock appearance

This will be an ongoing project for me, so keep it here for updates. Once the thread is complete, I'll probably clean it up for final presentation.

MATERIALS

There are a lot of cheap worthless resins out there. One company I have found that supplies high quality materials is US Composites. Their 435 Standard Polyester Layup Resin is perfect for automotive use and at $29.50 a gallon (hardener included), the price is right. This resin offers good strength and a nice flow out.

USC also supplies a plethora of fiberglass matting to match your particular job. For this enclosure, I'll be using a combination of 6oz E Glass, DBM 1208 Biaxial cloth and some 4" 1.5oz chop mat tape.

You will also need some sort of flexible mixing cup and some brushes (or rollers). It's good to use a flexible mixing container. After the remaining resin hardens, you can bend the container, breaking the resin loose and reuse the cup several times.

DESIGNING

After some rough measuring, I calculate there will be enough room for two cabinets about 0.6 cubic feet each. With the 14 inch width of this box, it is a perfect candidate for a pair of 10's. I'll be going with Rockford Fosgate's R2D4-10 subwoofers. The manufacture recommends a sealed enclosure of 0.59 cubic feet. Perfect.

You will see as this build progresses, all the carpeting will be removed from the hatch area. A bed of thin fiberglass will be placed to establish the shape, a center divider and top bracing will be added and the entire structure will be laminated with a thicker fiberglass cloth. Then, one single top board will be placed, sealing off the box and creating a place to mount the amp. Carpeting will be placed on the board and will continue as a single piece up the remainder of the hatch and behind the rear seats.

I will have lots of pictures. I haven't started it yet, as I ran into an unforeseen delay.

As I add to this, I will bump it though.

Looks like this project is about to get fired up again. I hope to have it complete by G16.
