Default Replace Engine Or Car?

So I found out I have a blown head gasket the mechanic said he would charge me 800 to change both gaskets and the water pump etc , the problem is the engine has 205k so really no point in fixing the gaskets. So now my question do I spend 900$ on a 60k engine and 600 for the installation 1500$ total or do I just part the car out and buy another? I really love my car but i'm not sure what to do. I am worried that if I put a new engine in it the transmission will go out soon after. Suggestions please!

I spent $1800 on a fully rebuilt Spartan engine and the assistance of a v6fb god and this car runs like new.

Frank has an excellent write up here on pulling the engine. Maybe you and a few buds could do it.

look for a series III motor L26, usually cheaper way more available, little bit more power lower mileage etc

you just have to swap over your intakes and rwd components

I was in this same situation when I decided to get the car back on the road. I ended up getting a junk yard motor for 400 and it turned out to be a great choice. however I have ran across some that are pure shit because these motors are bad about the LIM gaskets blowing and people don't change them.

Mine also had 210K miles on it and honestly these motors are pretty good motors. As long as the motor has been taken care of you can rebuild the one you have and it'll run for several years. Don't be afraid of the high mileage. If your not going to cam it or mod it just fix the gasket and drive it.

The first step is to pull the motor you have and break it open to see what condition its in. I'm going to say its not as bad for 200K miles.
