Thumbs up How To: DIY switch panel

In preparation for wiring up my manual fan switch, I decided to try to make a switch panel for it in the ashtray.
The cost of this was really low and it can be done in a day with simple household tools that most of you probably have.

Heres everything you'll need:
-One small sheet of lexan (got this at home depot a while back for around 5 or 7 bucks.
-Dremel w/ cutting wheel and some other attachments
-Painters tape
-Switch(es) of your choice
-Krylon Fusion Spray can, I used gloss black

*Keep in mind that this was done in the ashtray from my 95' auto, although I'm pretty sure the whole process would be really similar.

Procedure
-Wrap your sheet of lexan with a couple layers of painters tape, this is just to help protect it while you work on it.

-Pull your ashtray out of the console, theres nothing holding it in, it just comes right out.

-Place the ashtray on the lexan and trace around the opening with a sharpie.

-Using your dremel with the cutting wheel attachment, cut along your sharpie lines.

-Once your plate is cut out, you can measure out the size of the hole(s) that will be needed for your switch(es).

-Experiment around with different attachments to drill your hole, I just used a drill bit then a wierd looking dremel bit to widen the hole.

-You may want to sand the edges smooth now, you could also do this after you have painted, its optional.

Here is what you should have

Test fit the switch

If all has gone well so far, these are the next steps:

-Remove the painters tape as well as the protective covering on the BACK SIDE of your lexan.

-Paint your plate now. Its really easy, just do a few coats of black. Start out light and give it plenty of time to dry. I gave mine 4 or 5 coats.

After you are done painting, it should look like this

Once the paint is dry, you can now peel off the front side covering and you should see this

Nice and pretty right? At this point I had still not sanded my edges, so they look pretty gnarly right now.

Here is the final product, not wired up yet, but it looks cool for now.

I like this cause its really easy and almost anyone could do this in their spare time. Looks really clean and it fits perfectly under the ashtray lid when its closed.

i might not need a switch now. the county's thinking of banning all volunteers from using emergency lights at a scene now.
